Sarmiento, J. L., 1988: A Chemical Tracer Strategy for WOCE: Report of a Workshop Held in Seattle, Washington, January 22 and 23, 1987, U.S. WOCE Planning Report Number 10, 181 pp.
Abstract: This document provides a summary of recommendations for a chemical tracer sampling strategy for WOCE which were developed by a group of tracer and physical oceanographers who met in Seattle on Jan. 22 and 23, 1987. The main recommendations are given in the fourth chapter of the report for the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Southern Ocean. It was decided to consider the Atlantic Ocean at a future time when more of the tracer data from the TTO and SAVE studies become available. The first chapter of the report gives a summary of the meeting. The second chapter presents an overall discussion of the rationale for a tracer program in WOCE in the context of the stated goals of the program. The third chapter discusses the individual tracers to which the recommended sampling section alludes, covering what is known concerning the boundary conditions of the tracers, their distributions in the oceans, and some important applications of the tracers. A final chapter summarizes the results of a survey of present tracer laboratory measurement capacities. This survey was conducted to assess the needs for future developments in this area for WOCE.
